HOMA-IR Calculator: Insulin Resistance Score
How it is calculated
HOMA-IR = fasting insulin (µU/mL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL) ÷ 405 (or glucose in mmol/L ÷ 22.5).
What your result means
- In a large study of healthy adults, the reference range was about 0.39 to 2.86, with almost no difference between men and women.
- Insulin assays differ between laboratories, so HOMA-IR values from different labs are not always comparable.
- Your own lab's printed range and your clinician's read of your history come first; this calculator is educational and is not a diagnosis.
Test the inputs
The Metabolic and insulin panel measures the values this calculator uses. Related: fasting insulin, fasting glucose, hemoglobin a1c.
Common questions
Do both values need to be fasting?
Yes. HOMA-IR is defined on fasting insulin and fasting glucose from the same draw.
What is a normal HOMA-IR?
Healthy adults in a large study ranged from about 0.39 to 2.86. Labs and clinicians may use different cut-offs.
Can I use glucose in mmol/L?
Yes. With glucose in mmol/L, divide insulin times glucose by 22.5 instead of 405.
